This project won a 2015 Regional Chrysalis Award, a Regional CotY (Contractor of the Year) Award in the Residential Bath $25,000 to $50,000 category and two 2014 COTY Awards in the Residential Bath category, $30,000 to $60,000. It was published in the Winter 2015 Kitchens and Baths issue of Fine Homebuilding.

A leaking shower encouraged these homeowners to remodel their Master Bath. The L-shaped room had been remodeled in the 50’s and they were looking for a classic design solution to suit the style of their vintage home. During demolition, additional space was revealed behind the existing toilet. High on their list of priorities was to maximize the shower size; turning this area into a shower and moving the toilet to the former shower location was the perfect solution. Structural work on the old floor joists had to be completed before new large-diameter pipes could be installed in the floor. A large window in the new shower presented an obvious privacy concern, but a two-tiered solution solved this problem. We replaced the clear glass of the existing storm window with obscure glass, and filled the old interior window with obscure glass block. The final design evolved as the room was rebuilt. Classic white Subway tile was paired with marble accent pieces for the walls, vanity, shower nook and bench seat. To maintain a clean look, in-floor electric heat was added to warm the room. Cabinetry details were inspired by window trim found throughout the home. Photos by Greg Schmidt
